Terra Alta Cottages is now hiring Seasonal Staff for Summer 2019.

Spend the summer on a crystal clear Adirondack lake, nestled near the high peaks. Schroon Lake lies about 30 minutes north of Lake George, and less than 40 minutes from Lake Placid.  This beautiful spot has a character all its own, especially suited to outdoor life. At the north end of the Lake is a cottage colony called Terra Alta, which houses approximately 100 residents for the summer, about half of whom are children. The cottages date from the 1940s.

Compensation and Benefits

Position Descriptions

Each seasonal staff member will work a maximum of 30 hours per week, performing a variety of duties outlined below.  Each staff member must be at least 18 years of age, and have permission to work in the United States. Duties to be assigned based upon past experience and the needs of the cottage colony.  


Act as lifeguard on a private beach .  The lifeguard is on duty from 1 pm to 6 pm, seven days per week from July 1 through August 31.  This requires a valid Red Cross lifeguard credential.

Each guard is responsible for:

  • Managing the safety of the marked swimming area

  • Maintaining and issuing colony boating equipment

  • Raking and cleaning up the beachfront before each shift

  • Testing younger swimmers to assure they can pass a swim test

  • Teach swimming classes during Terra Alta Camp hours - 9:30-12:30 pm daily - Monday -Friday.  Camp runs from July 8-August 16, 2019.


Under the direction of the colony’s maintenance supervisor, conduct a variety of groundskeeping duties, including:

  • Painting (interior and exterior) of the cottages and other structures

  • Landscaping

  • Small repair

  • Waste management

Camp & Social Activities Counselor

Reporting to the co-Directors of the Terra Alta Day Camp, supervise the daily activities of a group of children from 9:30 am until 12:30 pm, Monday through Friday, July 8-August 16, 2019

Set-up, supervise and participate in Terra Alta community events such as movie nights, bonfires/stargazing, talent shows,tye-dyeing, softball games, potluck picnics and more.  


Under the direction of the colony’s short-term rental manager, conduct cleaning of cottages in between rentals, including changing linens and general cleanup.
